The escalating theft and vandalism of electrical infrastructure is no longer isolated to specific pockets like Hawston or the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley; it is a critical crisis affecting communities across the entire Overstrand. This criminal activity places an immense financial burden on our municipality, draining hundreds of thousands of rands from our collective budget.
Every rand spent replacing stolen cables and repairing sabotaged networks is vital funding taken directly away from local service delivery and community development.
The real cost, however, extends far beyond finances. Cable theft poses severe, life-threatening hazards to residents and creates widespread disruptions. Power outages leave families in the dark, compromise the safety of the elderly and interrupt the daily operations of our local schools and businesses.
We cannot combat this alone; curbing this crisis requires collective vigilance. We urge all Overstrand residents to stand together, remain alert, and immediately report any suspicious late-night activity, or unmarked vehicles transporting infrastructure materials.
Perpetrators face up to 10 years’ imprisonment and heavy fines.
Let’s protect our community. Report infrastructure crime immediately to our 24-Hour Law Enforcement number at 028 313 8996, via the Overstrand Citizen App, or at your nearest police station.

Many South Africans abroad assist elderly parents back home – including keeping an eye on municipal bills. A sudden spike in charges can be stressful, especially if you’re unable to call the municipality directly.
Fortunately, there are easy alternatives:
The app lets you log service requests, track queries, and book services like water tankers.
