Two unpleasant incidents occurred on the public holiday – one on the beach in Pringle Bay, the other on a mountain hiking path – where off-leash dogs chased baboons.
As a result, we’re reminding all dog owners across the Overstrand of an important and non-negotiable rule:
• Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times in public open spaces
In terms of the By-law Relating to the Keeping of Dogs and Cats, a public place includes any beach, road, street, thoroughfare, bridge, overhead bridge, subway, foot pavement, footpath, sidewalk, lane, square, open space, garden, park, bus or taxi rank, servitude, or enclosed space vested in the Council. It also includes any road, place, or thoroughfare which is in the undisturbed use of the public or to which the public has a right of access.
Even the friendliest dog can unintentionally cause distress, injury, or provoke wildlife such as birds, baboons and bokkies. Where dogs on a leash are allowed in nature reserves, please stick to designated trails, and always pick up after your dog.
This isn’t just about rules – it’s about respect, safety, and shared responsibility.
