Hermanus Library has been named the Public Library of the Year in the Western Cape, taking top honours at the Western Cape Government Cultural Affairs Awards held on Monday, 7 October, in Cape Town.
The award recognises a public library that goes above and beyond in service, innovation, and community involvement. Hermanus Library ticked all the boxes – from making resources more accessible and using technology in smart ways, to encouraging a love for reading and storytelling,
This recognition reflects the hard work and commitment of Khanyiso Molefe, Lizé Richter, Meghan Robertson, Zintle Ngwendu, Mighty Rwexana, Phozisa Kandile, Verlene Gibson, Deidre Cleophas, and Carren Dreyer-Bazier. Hermanus Library continues to be more than just a place to borrow books – it’s a welcoming space where people can learn, connect, and feel part of a community.
Highlights from Hermanus Library’s Recent Projects:
- Book launches in partnership with local businesses, including a well-attended event with Australian author Tony Park
- School group visits that include library orientation sessions and puppet shows
- Pet care education in partnership with Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) to teach children how to care for their pets in a fun and educational way
- Helped Waldorf School in setting up their own school library
- Hosting the weekly Bhuki Café every Friday
- Fundraising to buy new books, including high teas and other events
- Visits to old age homes to bring reading to elderly residents
Hawston Library shines in two categories
Also flying the flag high for Overstrand Municipality, Hawston Library earned two top awards at the same ceremony:
- 2nd Place in Substantial Contribution to Community Impact through Outreach Programmes
- 1st Place in Substantial Contribution to Reading and Literacy Development
These achievements reflect the ongoing efforts of the Hawston Library team, led by librarian Belinda May, to bring reading, education, and outreach programmes into the heart of their community.
