WORD OF WELCOME BY THE EXECUTIVE MAYOR
MUCH MORE THAN ONLY WHALE WATCHING
To provide municipal services to an area of more than 2125 km2 and look after the needs of more than the projected population of 73000 according to the 2001 Census is not an easy task, as the Overstrand Municipality’s Council of 19 and the personnel corps of about 1000 can attest to.
But we have set ourselves to even go beyond that and that is why our vision is to be a centre of excellence to our Communities, which include the towns of Hermanus, Gansbaai, Stanford, Kleinmond and many more seaside villages and townships.
Our mission is to deliver optimal services in support of sustainable economic, social and environmental goals and our strategic objectives are:
- To provide democratic and accountable governance;
- To provide and maintain municipal services;
- To manage and conserve our natural environment, our greatest asset;
- To create and maintain a safe and healthy environment; and
- To promote tourism, economic and rural development.

DEVELOPMENT OF MARKET SQUARE
|
|
The redevelopment of Market Square in Hermanus is part of an ongoing process to re-vitalise the Central Business District of Hermanus, according to Mr Riaan Kuchar, Overstrand Municipality’s Manager of Town Planning and Property Administration. Mr Kuchar responded to enquiries from the general public and in the media regarding the project currently underway on Market Square.
He pointed out that this process was already started in the year 2000 when GAPP ARCHITECTS and URBAN DESIGNERS were appointed to draw up a CBD Revitalisation Strategy for Hermanus. This strategy was completed with public participation during 2001.
