Suspect caught with abalone in car

On 6 May 2024, Overstrand Municipality received information regarding a vehicle travelling from the Gansbaai area to the N2 allegedly carrying abalone.

Members of the Rapid Response unit spotted the vehicle on the R326 near Raka wine farm, heading towards the R316 road and a high-speed chase ensued.

The members requested assistance from the Provincial Traffic Interception Unit to block the vehicle in the Caledon area.

They managed to stop the vehicle on the R316 in Caledon and 12 green plastic bags containing 2 725 units of abalone were found.

The driver was arrested and transported, with his vehicle, to the Caledon Police Station where a case docket against the driver was opened.
