As we enjoy the December holidays and the beauty of our stunning coastline, the Overstrand Municipality would
like to remind all dog owners about the important guidelines regarding our Blue Flag beaches in the area. These
include Grotto and Kleinmond, which have earned this prestigious international status, as well as our pilot status
beaches: Castle Beach, Hawston, and Onrus.
Some of the Blue Flag demarcated areas are located at the beginning of the beach, with no alternative access
points to the sand. We kindly request dog walkers to briskly walk on the road or lagoon side of the beach, with
their dog on a leash, to the designated area where dogs can be walked on a leash or in the two existing green
zones.
In addition, the following guidelines apply:
• On other beaches and public open spaces, including the cliff and coastal paths, dogs must be kept on a leash at all times. However, green zones at both Grotto and Kleinmond allow dogs to run off-leash within
those specific areas. While walking towards these areas, dogs must be kept on a leash and under the
control of the owner at all times.
• Clean up after your dog: Dog owners are reminded to bring waste bags and dispose of dog droppings responsibly. Please do not bury dog poop in the sand or dispose of it in the sea.
The Blue Flag programme is an international coastal management initiative that recognises beaches meeting
excellence in water quality, environmental management, environmental education, and safety services.
Maintaining this status brings numerous benefits, including improved tourism facilities, better coastal ecosystem
management, and greater environmental awareness.
The Municipality urges all visitors and residents to respect these regulations.
Together, we can ensure our beaches remain safe, clean, and accessible for all.
