Following numerous heartfelt pleas from residents across the Overstrand, the Municipal Manager has reconsidered the mowing approach for the current spring flowering season.
In consultation with the Parks and Environmental Departments, a revised approach has been agreed upon. Only road verges will be cut – for road safety and technical reasons, such as the maintenance of clear stormwater pipelines. All other public open spaces, greenbelts, and parks will be left unmowed until October.
The Municipal Manager has instructed the officials to collaborate closely with ward councillors via ward committees in establishing formal guidelines and policies for future mowing practices. This collaboration will focus on identifying and mapping conservation areas, especially those that support sensitive or endangered species like Satyrium hallackii subsp. hallackii and Liparia splendens, both listed on the SANBI Red List.
Residents are kindly asked to be patient and understanding, as parks and open spaces may appear untidy with overgrown grass until the end of the flowering season (usually towards the end of November), when they will be systematically returned to the regular mowing schedule.
