Hermanus Library Introduces Audio Services for the Visually Impaired

Members of Overstrand Libraries who are blind, visually impaired, or elderly can now enjoy thousands of audiobooks and other reading materials for free, thanks to two nifty devices.

Currently, Hermanus Library is the only library in the area offering these audiobook devices through a partnership with the South African Library for the Blind (SALB). These devices are invaluable for those who struggle with printed text or find it difficult to hold a book.

While the audiobook services are exclusive to Hermanus Library, members from other Overstrand Libraries can also benefit by visiting Hermanus in person to access the devices and receive assistance. SALB’s online collection includes more than 24 000 audio titles – including books, newspapers, and magazines which can be accessed via the SALB website (www.salb.org.za). Some of this material is also available for download.

In addition to Hermanus Library, the Hawston Library offers a special computer with an enlarged-letter keyboard, giving visually impaired users free internet access. Both libraries also feature the Eye-Pal SOLO, a device that scans printed pages and reads the text out aloud in seconds, providing another tool for those with visual challenges.

TAKE IT HOME:
Two types of devices are available at the Hermanus Library at no cost to approved members:

Envoy Connect: A compact, easy to use player powered by a solar panel and rechargeable battery – no electricity needed. Ideal for listening ‘on the go’, it allows users to store and access their favourite book from the built-in bookshelf, making it easier than ever to enjoy literature, study material, or daily information at home or on the move.

Victor Reader Status12M: This multi-media and MP3 player gives you access to a wide selection of DAISY audiobooks, recorded books, music, and digital documents from various media sources. Its 12-key telephone style keypad helps with easy and structured navigation, making it especially useful for reference and educational material with playback option.

A selection of fiction and non-fiction titles is available in English and Afrikaans. Patrons may borrow up to 15 titles at a time and can request additional books if they are not currently available in the library’s collection.

The audiobooks are exchanged with 300 titles every six weeks. Available titles include the Seven Sisters series by Lucinda Riley, all books by Kristin Hannah as well as books by Deon Meyer and Rudie van Rensburg in Afrikaans.

Contact:

Hermanus Library can assist with applications for the Envoy Connect or DAISY Player and help with loading audio content to get you started.
