The Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning is encouraging farmers, government institutions and pest control operators across the province to take advantage of the opportunity to safely dispose of obsolete pesticides.
The initiative offers farmers a safe, free disposal option with no legal repercussions for disposing of pesticides. There is no limit to the quantity that may be submitted for destruction, and all transport to Gauteng, as well as thermo-destruction costs, are covered by CropLife SA.
CropLife SA successfully recovered 127 tonnes of obsolete pesticides last year and now aims to reach a collection milestone of 150 tonnes by the end of June 2026.
Farmers are required to ensure that all obsolete pesticides are correctly recorded on the inventory form, including full details of the waste generator. All materials must be properly secured on wooden pallets and wrapped in cling film prior to delivery to designated drop-off points.
Please note:
* No fertilisers (liquid or granular), animal feeds or animal health products will be accepted
* CropLife does not collect materials from farms
* Farmers are responsible for delivery to designated drop-off points
This initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to promote safe agricultural practices, reduce environmental risk, and ensure the responsible management of hazardous agricultural waste in the Western Cape.
The inventory form can be obtained and sent to the CropLife SA PRO manager, Dr Gerhard Verdoorn, at gerhard@croplife.co.za
as soon as possible.
