Overstrand Municipality reaches out to elderly, disabled to apply for indigent support from home

The indigent support assists needy households that have limited financial ability to pay for municipal services.

All elderly or residents with physical disabilities who require assistance with the indigent application at home, can contact the Municipality to do household visits.

Overstrand Mayco Member of Finance, Councillor Stephen Williams, said the home visits are for those who are bed-ridden or too fragile to walk to the nearest hall to submit their applications for free basic services.

He encouraged vulnerable residents to submit their applications for rates and services relief.  “Anyone may apply to be considered for an indigent subsidy on an on-going basis; home visits, however, are a privilege for those with severe physical disabilities – please don’t abuse the system”.

To date, 40 home visits have been made of which 35 applications were successful, with a further 27 home visits to go.

Where can I apply?
Residents can visit any of the municipal offices in Gansbaai, Stanford, Hermanus or Kleinmond during the week for support.

Municipal officials are also available at various community halls across the Overstrand on certain dates to help needy households to register for Indigent Subsidy support for free basic services and 50 free electricity units.

Alternatively, phone the Finance Department for assistance during the week:
