Residents and businesses have the option to adjust their electricity connection sizes to better suit their consumption requirements. Overstrand Municipality encourages customers who may be experiencing capacity constraints or who wish to reduce their connection size to familiarise themselves with the applicable requirements and procedures.
All upgrades and downgrades are subject to network approval by the Electrical Department.
Single Phase Customers who currently have a 60 Amp prepaid connection may apply to change their connection size to one of the following:
* 30 Amp
* 40 Amp
* 50 Amp
* 60 Amp
Applications for non-standard connection sizes will be considered on a case-by-case basis by the Electrical Department.
All residential customers may change their connection size once, free of charge. Any subsequent changes will be charged at the approved annual tariffs.
Customers may upgrade or downgrade their connection size at the approved annual tariff rate without changing the main circuit breaker or providing a Certificate of Compliance (COC). However, should the Municipality be called out more than once due to meter overloading, a call-out fee will be charged. The customer will then be required to either:
* Replace the main circuit breaker and provide a valid Certificate of Compliance (COC); or
* Change to a more suitable connection size.
Single Phase credit customers wishing to downgrade from a 60 Amp connection to a 30 Amp, 40 Amp or 50 Amp connection will be required to convert to a prepaid electricity meter. The prepaid meter will be configured according to the approved connection size.
Customers may upgrade their connection size as often as required at the approved annual tariff rate but may only downgrade once during a financial year.
Please note that changing between different connection sizes remains subject to network approval and that these tariffs do not apply to customers in low-cost housing areas or to customers with Small-Scale Embedded Generation (SSEG) connections.
As SSEG applications are approved according to the installation size, all downgrades for SSEG customers will only be approved by the Senior Manager: Electrical Services.
To apply for a connection size change, residents can log a service request on the Collab Citizen App, complete the Electricity supply agreement form available on the Overstrand Website (www.overstrand.gov.za/document/electricity) and send the completed form to enquiries@overstrand.gov.za or contact the relevant Electrical Department office:
