With limited rainfall and high summer demand, our water supply is under pressure.

Hermanus’s average daily water use rose from 17.785 million litres per day last week to 18.661 million litres per day. The De Bos Dam level is currently at 83%, which is significantly lower than 96.4% at the same time last year.

Every household has a role to play in protecting our water supply this summer. While one household may use a small amount of water, together households have the biggest impact on overall water use.

These guidelines focus on responsible use, co-operation and preventing unnecessary water loss. Using water wisely now can help us avoid stricter water restrictions later in the summer.

We urgently appeal to all residents, businesses and institutions to take water saving seriously and to work together to reduce water consumption. By avoiding waste and following simple water-saving steps, we can help stabilise our water resources and prevent future restrictions.

• Water-saving tips:
  * Make sure taps are properly closed.
  * Check for leaks and fix them as soon as possible.
  * Reduce shower time.
  * Turn off taps while brushing teeth, shaving or soaping.
  * Toilets use a lot of water – flush only when necessary.
  * Water gardens only before 09:00 or after 17:00 to reduce water loss through evaporation.
  * Cover swimming pools when not in use, recycle backwash water, and top up with rainwater or alternative water sources.
  * Use grey water for flushing toilets where possible.
  * Only use washing machines and dishwashers when you have a full load.
  * Check irrigation equipment and connections regularly.
  * Check irrigation timers often to avoid overwatering.
