All artisans are required to register

Registration is now compulsory for all qualified artisans practicing or seeking employment in South Africa.

On 19 and 20 May 2026, relevant role-players will be in Hermanus to register qualified artisans on the National Register of Artisans, as required by the Register of Artisans Regulations.

Why register?
The National Register of Artisans serves as the official national database of all qualified artisans in South Africa. Registration ensures the recognition, verification, and traceability of artisan qualifications for purposes of employment, mobility, and national skills planning.

Registration also supports:

  • Verification of trade certificates by employers and industry bodies
  • Updated national records to support artisan development and planning
  • Compliance with national legislation and the Register of Artisans Regulations

Who must register?
All individuals who have obtained a trade qualification through any of the following:
* QCTA-accredited Trade Test Centres
* National Artisan Moderation Body (NAMB)-approved providers
* Recognised historical or legacy trade qualifications
* Skills Development Act compliant trade test routes

Required documents:
South African artisans must bring the following documents for registration:

  • Certified copy of Artisan Trade Certificate
  • Certified copy of South African Identity Document
  • Proof of residential address

Foreign national artisans must bring the following documents for registration: a certified copy of their passport, a valid visa or work permit issued by the Department of Home Affairs, a certified copy of their Artisan Trade Certificate (if the trade test was conducted in South Africa), certified copies of all foreign trade certificates, a SAQA-issued foreign qualification evaluation letter, and proof of residential address.
