Overstrand Municipality has been, once again, recognised as the top-performing municipality in the Western Cape’s Municipal Waste Management Recognition Programme, an initiative led by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEA&DP).

The award recognises municipalities that provide effective waste management services, comply with environmental requirements, maintain accurate waste management information and promote waste reduction and recycling.

Certificates were presented to the top three municipalities during the Waste Management Officers Forum on 14 August 2026.

Overstrand achieved first place, with strong competition from other top-performing municipalities in the Western Cape. Mossel Bay placed second, while Drakenstein took third place.

This achievement reflects the Overstrand Municipality’s ongoing commitment to providing quality waste management services and protecting the environment. It is also a recognition of the dedication and hard work of the Solid Waste Management team under the leadership of Manager: Solid Waste, Craig Mitchell.

Executive Mayor, Alderman Archie Klaas, welcomed the recognition, which has replaced the Greenest Municipality competition and continues to drive improvements in waste management services. “We are proud of this achievement and of the team who work every day to keep our communities clean. This recognition belongs not only to the Municipality but also to our residents who support recycling initiatives and make responsible use of our waste services.”

The Municipality thanked residents, businesses and community organisations for their continued support and encouraged everyone to help reduce litter and illegal dumping, recycle where possible and make use of the waste management services available across the Overstrand.
