Beware of municipal account scam

Overstrand Municipality is warning residents to remain vigilant following reports of scam WhatsApp messages in which individuals falsely claim that municipal accounts are in arrears and threaten immediate disconnection of services unless payment is made.

In the latest reported case, a person identifying himself as Darrick Smith and claiming to represent Overstrand Municipality contacted residents from the number 065 594 4446.

Overstrand Municipality confirms that it will never notify residents via WhatsApp that their municipal account is in arrears, nor will it threaten immediate disconnection of services in this manner.

The formal process followed for arrear accounts is strictly as follows:

  • If a client’s cellphone number is on record, an SMS will be sent notifying the client that the account is in arrears and allowing two days for payment.
  • If payment is not received within two days, a 14-day written notice will be delivered to the physical address and sent via email, where available.
Only if payment is not received within the 14-day notice period will municipal services be restricted and/or disconnected.
Residents are also reminded that municipal officials will never demand immediate or upfront payment to prevent the disconnection of services.

Any payments, including reconnection fees, must be made directly into Overstrand Municipality’s official bank account via EFT or in person at a municipal rates hall.

Residents who receive suspicious messages or calls are encouraged to verify the information directly with Overstrand Municipality before making any payment.
