Overstrand Municipality is celebrating International Day of Forests with the planting of 30 trees, at the Mount Pleasant cemetery.

These trees were kindly donated by the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) and are the first of 1 000 trees to be planted across the Overstrand.

The UN General Assembly proclaimed 21 March as the International Day of Forests in 2012. The Day celebrates all types of forests and create awareness about the importance of preserving them.

The theme for 2023 is 'Forests and health' that highlights the connection that exists between the forests and human health.

Another 100 families will have the joy of moving into their own homes in Phase 2 of the Integrated Residential Development Programme (IRDP) in Blompark, Gansbaai. Eight houses are for those with disabilities and special needs.

In August 2022, the first 150 houses were completed and handed over to beneficiaries as part of phase 1. If all goes according to plan, Phase 3 (the last phase) of 150 houses will commence in April 2023.

The development will deliver 539 top structures. The total costs in respect of both civil infrastructure and houses amounts to R124.8 million.

On delivering her speech, Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, thanked the community of Blompark and Beverly Hills, for waiting their turn in allowing the Western Cape Housing Department to successfully deliver the housing project.

The drama group from Zwelihle, Spairo Art Foundation, who participated in the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sports (DCAS) Drama Festival, was recently crowned as regional winners for their production: Pandemic 2.

As winners, this local performing arts group will perform at the upcoming Annual Baxter Zabalaza Theatre Festival on 25 March 2023 and at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town on 1 May 2023.

Due to contractual obligations that came with their success, they can no longer repeat this performance whenever they would like, so opportunities are limited.

The Absa Cape Epic comes to the Overstrand for the fifth time. This year, Overstrand is the host destination for Stages 1, 2 and 3 of the race.

Stage 1 includes 2 550m of climbing as it ascends through the best of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Stage 2 is sure to be one of the most captivating days of the 2023 race. Stage 3’s challenge begins from the gun, with a climb out of Hermanus and into the wild.

It was a busy day for Overstrand Municipality’s Law Enforcement Rapid Response, Marine and Land Invasion Units while conducting By-law enforcement, crime prevention and boat patrols as well as road policing in the Greater Hermanus and Gansbaai areas on 13 March 2023.
