#Overstrand #HighlandsFire #Kleinmond Day 4 – update 2, 11/1/22

Status: 95% Contained. One structure destroyed.

Origin of the fire: Our focus, thus far, has been on extinguishing the fire. Enviro Wildfire Services has been appointed to do a fire investigation. Indications are that the fire originated on Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) property.

The remaining hotspot on Perdeberg has been successfully contained by CapeNature this morning. Aerial resources have bombed the area since early this morning and supported by their relief crew continue mopping up operations. Currently the mountain is covered in cloud.

Karwyderskraal (farmland R43 direction Babilontoren): Currently no active fire in the Division. Fire Services in attendance busy with mop-up work.

Rooisand: A burnout is underway to make the area safe. There is a small area in the river.

Highlands Rd: Out! The Forestry support programme, with Mr Aubrey Thompson and his 22-person team is on the line ensuring the line is safe.

Arabella: There are vehicles on the scene to contain and deal with flare-ups as and when it happens.

Heuningkloof: No active lines and hotspots are being attended to.

Agricultural Damage report:

Between Div B and Div C - Area from Kleinmond to Arabella:

Estimated 10ha damage to cultivated and sowed fynbos.

Div A - Rivendell (on R43 next to Arabella), Botrivierplaas (Karwyderskraal):

Farmers reported limited damage as it was all veld that burned with minor damage to fences. This was due to the fast response from our farmers - HARSA/goFPA members and Fire Services.

Div D and E - This is the back of the Highlands Mountain, including Tokara and access to the agriculture area of Elgin and the lower Botrivier farms.

A mammoth effort from Overberg District, CapeNature, Overstrand Municipality, The Forestry Support Programme (DFFE) and our Lower Botrivier Fire Management Unit did a burnout on the mountain from the R43 to the Perdeberg nature reserve (above Tokara Vineyards). This prevented fire spread on to the farms with limited damage.
