On Friday, 26 October Mayor Dudley Coetzee had the opportunity to engage with business owners in his home town of Gansbaai on his ‘meet and greet’ walkabout to see how they are doing and what their issues were.

He was accompanied by Deputy Mayor Elnora Gillion, Councillors Riana de Coning and Andrew Komani, Gansbaai Tourism office manager Glenda Kitley, as well as Cape Whale Coast tourism manger Frieda Lloyd.

It was a busy morning and they got to meet quite a number of business owners, including De Wet and Morkel van Niekerk of Superspar, Chris van Rensburg of OK Foods, David Sawtelle of Pam Golding, Betsie de Will of ABSA, Jan and Doreen Barnard of Bayview Furnishers, Cheryl Lorenzen of Sportzone and Genery Fick of Pep Stores.

The Mayor took the time to ‘pop’ in at the weekly Friday Morning Market at the NG Church, where local singer Eddie Barnard, provided the live entertainment for the morning.

The Mayor complimented all involved on the success of this year’s Funky Fynbos Festival and thanked the locals and businesses for what they are doing for the town - not only boosting the economy but also by trying to make a difference and assisting those in need where ever they can.

Naturally, concerns were raised about the abalone poaching in the area and the effect it has on the morale of law-abiding citizens, property prices and crime amongst others.

Topics also included the inevitable delays expected when the roadworks along the R43 between Gansbaai and Hermanus start and the concern is that it will be a huge inconvenience.  However Mayor Coetzee said he is confident that the long-term benefits will be worth it.
