MUCH MORE THAN ONLY WHALE WATCHING

To provide municipal services to an area of more than 2125 km2 and look after the needs of more than the projected population of 73000 according to the 2001 Census is not an easy task, as the Overstrand Municipality’s Council of 19 and the personnel corps of about 1000 can attest to.

But we have set ourselves to even go beyond that and that is why our vision is to be a centre of excellence to our Communities, which include the towns of Hermanus, Gansbaai, Stanford, Kleinmond and many more seaside villages and townships.

Our mission is to deliver optimal services in support of sustainable economic, social and environmental goals and our strategic objectives are:

• To provide democratic and accountable governance;
• To provide and maintain municipal services;
• To manage and conserve our natural environment, our greatest asset;
• To create and maintain a safe and healthy environment; and
• To promote tourism, economic and rural development.

EAGER TO LEARN ABOUT BUSINESS An advance training programme  for tender preparation, costing and pricing is currently presented by the Overstrand Municipality as follow-up to the successful Tender Information Sessions last year.  Although the programme was intended for contractors who attended the previous opportunity, a number of newcomers were also accommodated. A total of 30 business owners attended and they represented construction, catering, cleaning, tourism, hairdressing, clothing and beauty. The two week training is funded by the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism and was presented by John Prinsloo, a tender specialist. Read more...   CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE OVERSTRAND MAYOR’S ANNUAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION AWARD Nominations are once again invited for the prestigious Mayor’s Award for Environmental Conservation. The closing date for entries is 1 April and the winner will be announced at an award ceremony during the third week of April 2010. Individuals or organisations making an exceptional contribution to environmental conservation within the Overstrand Municipal area, may be entered, including previous winners and finalists. In the case of previous winners only work done since receiving the award will be taken into account. Due to budgetary constraints, there will unfortunately not be a monetary prize attached to the award this year. The winning entry will be announced and honoured at the same ceremony as the Mayor’s awards for community service excellence. The competition is run by the Overstrand Conservation Foundation on behalf of the Mayor.
